Toronto's Weird Weather

Updated: Aug 6, 2021

The sound of raindrops hitting my window woke me up this morning. Today was a mix of cloudy and light rains, according to Environment Canada.

Rain showers this afternoon at North York, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Since I came here, I noticed that Toronto's weather in the past months is weird. There are days when the sun is up and then suddenly the next day it is raining.

As I was looking through the window, I couldn't help but think of the weather on the days to come. Canada is currently in its summer season, which will last until August or September. Then comes the fall and winter.

Canada's climate is new to me because the Philippines has two major seasons which are the rainy season from June to November and the dry season from December to May. That means that if we are in a dry season, we only expect few showers of rain and vice versa.

At home, when it's raining, the air is cool or colder at times. Here in Toronto (at least during the rainy days when I was out), the humidity level stays high even when it's raining.

When I was in my home country, I honestly don't check the weather unless there's a tropical cyclone advisory that may affect our area. This is because when it's summer, the heat index is usually high. When it's the rainy season, the temperature is mostly cold.

So far, I'm still trying to understand the weather in Toronto. My housemates advise me to "always check the weather" before heading out the door. I never understood it before, but I do now.

I remember one time when I went out to buy essentials. I didn't check the weather. I only relied on what I saw from my window that day. It was a cloudy day, and it didn't look cold outside, so I thought I didn't have to wear thick layers of clothes. To my surprise, it was cold, my hands and legs were in pain, and the wind was strong that I had to hold on to my grocery cart.

There was also one time when I thought it's going to be cold because it's raining, but it was so hot. I was sweating inside my jacket. This is one of the times when you could not decide what to wear because the weather forecast may change at any moment.

I checked the weather forecast this week and it says tomorrow will be cloudy with a chance of rain and thunderstorm. The humidity is at 28.

On Saturday, Toronto will have a mix of sun and cloud. From Sunday to Tuesday, we are back to rain showers again.

Although the weather in Toronto is weird recently (at least for me), I still find it interesting because now I get to experience four amazing seasons. I'm hoping to experience the fall and winter this year.

As promised, I will leave you with a word in our dialect that I believe is appropriate for today's weather. That word is ulan (rain).

Here's a song entitled "Ulan" by Filipino singer Janine Teñoso. Enjoy.

Talk to you soon.
