Missing that Golden Brown Look

I am probably one of those who are trying so hard to learn how to cook but fail. Cooking has never been my expertise. I grew up buying food in carinderia, which is a food stall located in every market and every roadside in the Philippines.


This is probably why I never thought of cooking in the first place. Since I arrived in Canada, I had to learn the hard way. I mean I can cook simple dishes, but when it comes to complicated ones I always find myself spending more time watching YouTube tutorials than using that time to start cooking.


And then when I'm putting in the ingredients, I get lost. Don't even mention the part where tutorials say "season to taste." I feel like it's not the same for everyone. What if I want it more sweet, spicy, salty, or sour?


Today, I cooked a fried chicken. And you probably know what happened next: I missed that golden brown look.


And what's worse is that I almost set the house on fire when the oil overflowed (I kind of poured too much cooking oil in a small saucepan).

But don't panic. Since you're reading my blog right now, rest assured that everything went well.


My chicken thigh parts were cooked decently, but they don't look golden brown. They looked . . . darker but still delicious. They are a bit softer on the inside and crispy on the outside.


After what happened today, I realized that frying chicken is no easy task. I need to consider the amount of oil I use, the cooking time, the heat levels, and so on.


Anyway, I can always eat my mistake, learn from that gaffe, and practice frying chicken to finally achieve that golden brown look.


In the meantime, I will go back to watching YouTube tutorials on how to fry a perfectly golden brown chicken. You can watch it with me, too.


I guess all I have to say now is: "Mangaon ta (let's eat)."
